Looking for something different?

Here are some less typical classes in and around the NW to help make your winter a bit brighter.  While they won’t melt the snow or prevent ice storms, they will help chase the winter blues away.  If you can get there.
Capoeira Angola Classes
With instructor Ras Michaiah Hall – ongoing.  Capoeira Angola is a martial art originating from Angola.  Class is held on Thursdays 2pm at the Waterview Recreation Center, 5826 McMahon Street Phila, PA 19144.

Y 101 — WHYY Afterschool: Documentary Program
Learn to shoot, edit, and produce great documentaries in WHYY’s award-winning Public Media Commons. WHYY’s Afterschool Documentary Workshop is a video production program for area teens, grades 10-12. The program combines media literacy, video production, and social action, as students learn to produce short documentaries on a topic of their choosing. There are tons of wonderful classes for children and adults at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts.  Classes start for children as young as three years old and include family circus, gymfoolery, juggling, balancing, acrobatics, and aerials… talk about a fun way to keep in shape!
And check out the local pop-up studio at the Green on Greene in Mt. Airy.  Renowned textiles curator and artist Edward Maeder will teach workshops on using everyday paper such as napkins, doilies, crepe and tissue paper to create accessories and home items.  Maeder was the curator of the LA County Museum of Art’s Department of Costumes and Textiles.
 “Make Accessories from Found Paper”- Adults & Kids, $12, 2 hrs on Sun., Feb. 13, 10 am-noon $12, For everyone (8yrs and up)
“Old Fashioned Valentines” – Adults & Kids, $12, 2 hrs.  Bring one or more photos or photocopies of yourself that can be cut.  Sun., Feb 13, 1:30-3:30 pm.  For everyone  (6yrs and up)
“Old Fashioned Valentines” – Young kids with adults, $10, 1 hr.  Bring one or more photos or photocopies of your child that can be cut.  Sun. Feb 13. 4-5 pm.  For kids 3-5.

And the Arden Theater has some unique classes for kids as well: Bookworms for the pre-k set, Kids Crew for grades k-5 and the Teen Company for middle and high schoolers.  The Bookworms class is new and invites kids and their caregivers to a book club with discussion, props and costumes!  Tuesdays or Saturdays:
