This week… around the world through music.

West Philly Orchestra

Treat your kids to some great free and low-cost musical events in and around the NW this week:

Monday-  Global Passages youth concert at the Mann Music Center.  We FINALLY have nice weather, so this should be a wonderful show.  FREE concert with Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble, Saboricua: The Roots of Salsa Music and Dance, and The Monkey King with the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society.  Tickets are not required, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.  11am.

And after you’ve returned home and learned about the world through music, you can visit the Lovett Library in Mt. Airy for their  own “Discover the World” series with games, stories, arts, and crafts.  3pm.  FREE.

Wednesday- this is NOT your grandfather’s orchestra!  For the last Pastorius Park Concert of 2011, listeners will be treated to the way-fun sound of the West Philly Orchestra.  HIghlighting percussion and brass, they have a unique and wide repertoire of Balkan, Swing, Klezmer and Pop (which apparently does NOT include the Bee Gees).  Definitely music kids and their respective adults can enjoy.

Thursday- Hopefully you won’t be all concert-ed out because the Morris Arboretum will be “Groovin’ in the Garden” with their WRTI Kids’ Jazz Concert.  The “Plan B Jazz Band”  (love that band name) will bring their locally grown music to the big lawn starting at 7pm, but there will be free beer tasting (not for the kids) from 6-7pm.  Bring blankets/chairs.  Fees are assigned per CAR (not person), and you definitely want to find at least one member-friend and offer them a ride.  Read why here:
