’tis the season… mammoth school open house list

If you are considering your school options, we’ve compiled a large list of open houses happening this fall at schools frequently used by parents in the NW.  If you know of others we could add, please comment below, and we’ll be sure to add them.  So these are the dates, but who should go?  When should you go?  What should you look for?  And why go at all?

Who should go?  If you are considering any of these public, charter, or private options for your child, you should go!  (And many area public schools allow parents to tour if they call to make an appointment… I highly recommend that as well).

Why go?  Open houses offer a snapshot glimpse of what these schools have to offer.  They can give you a real-world sense of the “goodness of fit” between your child and this school.  It is only a snapshot, and the schools are definitely in their “Sunday best” mode, but it still offers you a piece of the informational puzzle.  Once you’ve narrowed down the field to 2-3 schools, go back and spend time observing on a typical day, soak in the atmosphere, try it on, and see how it feels.

When should you go?  As early as possible.  If you are considering applying to these schools for the 2012-2013 school year, most of them have admissions deadlines in December and January.  For most, that means you have to have any testing requirements (for older grades), a parent admissions interview, a half or full day, or mutliple-day visit from your child, and all paperwork submitted in less than 2-3 months.  Visit now!  If you are looking ahead for subsequent years, visiting now is a very smart way to narrow down the field so that your fall admissions process goes smoothly.

What should you look for?  Look for a school that has the right feel for your child and for your hopes for their education… remembering that sometimes those two things look very different!  Finding the best fit for your child is the ultimate goal.  Sometimes our vision of the “best” school is not the best school for our children.  Think about who your child is and where he/she will be comfortable, cared for, engaged, challenged, and happy.  Now on to the list!

The date for Wissahickon Charter – and the link – I’m pretty sure are wrong.

Open house is THIS wednesday October 19th. The link is to an old version of their website, the new one is here:

Thanks so much! I used the link from one of our old posts and did not notice the year was wrong. I’ll edit it above.

Thank you for putting this together. We are all set but had a giant excel sheet for this purpose last year. I will direct parents to this because I have shared my sheet with many a random parent but it is out of date. I would add 2 more catholic schools that are well respected. ST Genevieve’s in Flourtown and ST Philip’s in Lafayette Hill.

I would like to also add Immaculate Heart of Mary. Their Open House is on Sunday, October 23, 10:30am to 1:00pm.

I added IHM, but couldn’t find open house dates for St. Genevieve’s or St. Phillips… please post if you know them, and I’ll add them to the list.

In addition to the dates above, Plymouth Meeting Friends School is also having an open house on Saturday, Nov. 5. Thanks!
