art, concerts, fireworks and movies this weekend

The Plants/Sprouting Up

This weekend offers plenty to do for families in the Northwest and beyond.  So set the DVR to tape the olympics and head out to one of these events:

Friday Night:

WXPN Kids Concert at the Morris Arbortetum. Admission is by the carload.  $20 for members, $40 for non-members.  So break out that big ol’ van and go enjoy the band with the #1 kids song of 2011.  The Plants will sing “The Monster Under my Bed” and other favorites from their recent album, “Sprouting Out”.

Not in the mood for a concert?  Then maybe an outdoor movie (and a musical one, to boot) is more your style.  Take the kids, a blanket, and some chairs and head over to the Moonlight Movies Series in Mt. Airy for The West Side Story!  You can get your Krupke on outside the Lovett Library at 8:30pm.

Looking for something even bigger?  Head downtown for the Smooth Jazz Concert and Friday Night Lights series at Penn’s Landing.  The concert starts at 7:30pm and the fireworks show starts at 9:15pm near the new Riverview Stage.

Saturday Night

If old flicks like West Side Story aren’t your style, bring the kids to the Trolley Car Diner for a more recent movie.  Bring a blanket and chairs and be there by sunset… 7619 Germantown Ave. in Mt. Airy.

Sunday

Sunday is Pay-what-you-wish admission at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  That means that our world-class museum is affordable AND that there will be amazing family/children’s programming as well.  This week, the Family Studo will explore “Summer Splendor.”

All Weekend

If the weather doesn’t cooperate for the evening outdoor activities listed above, you’re still in luck of you’re a Bank of America cardholder.  You can enjoy free admission to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, National Constitution Center, African American Museum, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.  August 4-5.
